Cadet Classifications

1st CLASS |

On initially joining a Squadron or Detached Flight you will be known as a Probationer. During your time as a probationer you will learn the basics about the Air Training Corps and about basic drill. During this time you will not wear the cadet uniform but may be issued with coveralls depending on supplies of individual units. Despite not being in uniform you will be expected to maintain a minimum standard of dress.
Once enrolled you will issued with a uniform which you will have to wear except when authorised not to do so. You will be known as a 2nd Class cadet while you continue studies on a number of basic subjects. As a 2nd Class cadet you will be able to attend certain activities including Gliding Induction Courses. On completion and passing of each of the six courses you will have passed the 1st Class syllabus and be awarded your 1st Class badge and certificate. As a 1st Class Cadet you will be able to attend UK RAF Camps.

LEADING |

Having become a 1st Class Cadet you will commence studies towards Leading Cadet Classification. Like the 1st Class syllabus you will study a number of subjects and take exams which are in multi-choice format. In the Leading Cadet Classification there are only three subjects though they are slightly more intense than the 1st Class subjects. The exams are also held only on set dates of the year, usually March, June and December. On successful completion of the exams you will receive your Leading Cadet badge and certificate. As a Leading Cadet you will also be able to attend overseas camps subject to age and having attended a UK Camp.

SENIOR |

Senior Cadet classification is attained by successfully passing two subjects in a multiple choice exam. Although there are only two subjects they are more technical than the subjects at Leading Cadet level. Cadets who wish to be promoted above Corporal should ideally be a Senior Cadet

STAFF |

To attain Staff Cadet classification and the yellow
braid it is necessary to have been enrolled for two years and then
successfully pass two further subjects in a multiple choice exam. This is known as Part 1. Having Passed Part 1 it is necessary to
successfully pass Part 2 which consists of an interview taken by an
independent assessor who assesses the cadets knowledge of the ATC.
